Furnace Making a Banging or Clicking Noise? Here's What It Means
Furnaces aren't silent, but there's a difference between the normal hum of a running system and a sound that means something's wrong. Here's how to tell your furnace's noises apart.
What Each Noise Means
Banging or a Small "Boom" at Startup
This is one of the most common furnace complaints in fall. It usually means gas is building up in the burner chamber before it ignites, then igniting all at once instead of smoothly. Causes include dirty burners, a failing ignitor, or a clogged gas valve.
Clicking That Repeats Without the Furnace Turning On
Usually the ignitor or flame sensor trying (and failing) to start the burner. The system may be trying and shutting itself down as a safety measure. A dirty flame sensor is a common, inexpensive fix.
Rattling or Vibrating
Often a loose panel, screw, or duct connection — not always urgent, but worth tightening since ongoing vibration can loosen other components over time.
Screeching or Squealing
Usually a worn blower belt or a motor bearing that needs lubrication or replacement. This tends to get worse, not better, if left alone.
What You Can Safely Check Yourself
Check the Access Panels
Make sure furnace access panels are fully seated and screwed in — a loose panel alone causes a surprising amount of rattling and banging that has nothing to do with the mechanics inside.
When to Call a Professional
Any banging at ignition, or noises that are new, getting louder, or accompanied by a burning smell, should be looked at before the system is running daily through winter.
