Slow Draining Sink or Tub: Clog, Vent Issue, or Something Worse?

Home Slow Draining Sink

A slow drain is easy to ignore — until it stops draining altogether. Here's how to figure out what's actually behind it before it becomes a bigger problem.

The Causes

What's Actually Causing It

Simple Clog (the Most Common Cause)

Hair, soap scum, and grease build up along the inside of pipes over time, narrowing the passage until water backs up. This is usually isolated to one fixture and gets gradually worse over weeks or months.

Multiple Fixtures Draining Slowly at Once

If your bathroom sink, tub, and toilet are all slow (or a whole floor of the house is affected), the clog is likely further down the line, in a main drain shared by multiple fixtures — not something a plunger or drain cleaner at one sink will fix.

Gurgling Sounds When You Drain Water

A gurgling sound, especially from a nearby fixture when you run water in another, often points to a venting issue. Plumbing vents let air into the drain system so water can flow smoothly; if a vent is blocked (sometimes by debris, leaves, or even a bird's nest at the roof vent), it can cause slow draining and gurgling throughout the house.

Tree Root Intrusion

In older homes with clay or older PVC sewer lines, tree roots can grow into small cracks or joints over years, gradually restricting flow. This tends to show up as a slow, worsening drain across the whole house rather than one fixture.

Self-Check

What You Can Safely Check Yourself

Try a Drain Snake, Not Chemicals

For a single slow fixture, a drain snake (not just a plunger) often clears a localized clog. Avoid chemical drain cleaners if you can — they can damage older pipes and don't address the root cause if it's not a simple grease/hair clog.

Take Action

When to Call a Professional

If multiple fixtures are affected, you hear gurgling, or a single fixture keeps re-clogging despite cleaning, it's worth a professional drain inspection — sometimes with a camera — to find the actual location and cause rather than guessing.
